Lorsqu\u2019un tentacule de m\u00e9duse m\u2019a tatou\u00e9 sa lancinante marque \u00e9rubescente sur le front, l\u2019ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re \u00e0 Marseille, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 sonn\u00e9 pendant deux heures et je me suis demand\u00e9 si en plus de la douleur, cet accident ne pourrait pas me conf\u00e9rer de petits superpouvoirs. C\u2019\u00e9tait bien arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 Peter Parker \u2014 je me voyais d\u00e9j\u00e0 flotter \u00e0 la d\u00e9rive, les filaments en \u00e9ventail, m\u00e9duse-man ne glandouillant rien, mais \u00e0 la perfection. Et puis en reprenant mes esprits je me suis dit qu\u2019on \u00e9tait en quelque sorte finement r\u00e9gl\u00e9 par l\u2019\u00e9volution, un peu comme une horloge ou \u00e0 une cha\u00eene hi-fi, et qu\u2019il y n\u2019y avait quasiment aucune chance pour qu\u2019une petite modification accidentelle, du genre de celle conf\u00e9r\u00e9e par une piq\u00fbre de m\u00e9duse, am\u00e9liore notre fonctionnement. Essayez d’inverser deux c\u00e2bles au hasard dans votre cha\u00eene hifi ou de tordre un engrenage dans votre montre suisse, pour qu’elles marchent mieux…<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Dans ce papier<\/a> publi\u00e9 dans un num\u00e9ro sp\u00e9cial du Journal of Consciousness Studies dirig\u00e9 par F. Kammerer et K. Frankish, que je r\u00e9sume pour le blog Imperfect Cognitions<\/a> (merci Lisa Bortolotti), j\u2019utilise ce genre de consid\u00e9rations pour rejeter une vieille id\u00e9e, tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9gnante chez les romantiques et jusque dans la psychopathologie ph\u00e9nom\u00e9nologique ou la premi\u00e8re psychiatrie \u00e9volutionniste, une id\u00e9e dure \u00e0 cuire que l\u2019on peut faire remonter au moins au Ph\u00e8dre de Platon et \u00e0 un court essai sur le g\u00e9nie et la m\u00e9lancolie attribu\u00e9 \u00e0 tort \u00e0 Aristote qui attribue des superpouvoirs cognitifs \u00e0 la folie (je dis \u00ab au moins \u00e0 Platon \u00bb, car je connais mal l\u2019Ancien Testament, lequel doit bien, j\u2019imagine, assimiler quelque part les proph\u00e8tes et les fous, et pr\u00e9figurer le \u00ab d\u00e9lire divin \u00bb de Platon). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a jellyfish tentacle tattooed its throbbing, red mark on my forehead, last year in Marseille, I was stunned for two hours, wondering if, in addition to the pain, this mishap might endow me with superpowers. After all, it had happened to Peter Parker\u2014I could already see myself floating aimlessly, tentacles spread out, being Jellyfish-man, lazing about doing absolutely, but absolutely nothing perfectly. Then, as I regained my senses, I thought that we are, in a way, finely tuned by evolution, like a clock or a hi-fi system, and that there’s almost no chance that a small accidental modification, like the kind from a jellyfish sting, could improve our functioning. Try to invert some random cables in your hi-fi system or to tilt some gear in you swiss clock to make them work better…

In this paper published in a special issue of the Journal of Consciousness Studies, edited by F. Kammerer and K. Frankish, which I summarize for the blog Imperfect Cognitions (thanks to Lisa Bortolotti), I use this kind of consideration to dismiss an old idea to the effect that madness confers some kinds of cognitive super-powers. This idea is a tough nut to crack. It can be traced back at least to Plato’s Phaedrus and a short essay on genius and melancholy wrongly attributed to Aristotle, and is still very prevalent among the romantics, in phenomenological psychopathology or early evolutionary psychiatry, (I say that it can be traced back \u2018at least to Plato’ because I’m not well-versed in the Old Testament, which I assume somewhere equates prophets and madmen, foreshadowing Plato’s ‘divine madness’).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
